Half of the semester may be over, but we can’t breathe a sigh of relief just yet. This can be a stressful time for students with mid-terms, meetings with advisors, registering for Spring classes, checking grades, etc., so here are a few things (some “do’s” and “don’ts”) to keep in mind for the rest of the semester:

1) DO Stay Focused

It’s always tough to come back from a break but it’s important not to lose focus now. Focus on your goals for the semester and more importantly, on your exam/due dates! Whether it’s getting good grades or snagging that dream internship, the only way you’re going to get what you want is by working for it.

2) DO Stay Organized

This cannot be emphasized enough. Good organization is key! Knowing when things are due and dates of exams is crucial to your success. Having a planner/organizer with all of these important dates at your disposal will save you time and stress later.

3) DO Utilize Your Time Effectively

If you’re organized, this one shouldn’t be too difficult. Time management is important when it comes to school; most of us have other things to worry about in addition to school so “blocking” your time can be very helpful. Allot some time for homework/studying, some for work, and some for social/downtime. Managing your time well is just another way to help reduce stress as the semester wears on.

4) DON’T Be Afraid to Talk to Your Professors–that’s what they’re there for!

Most professors are more than happy to help with any questions or concerns you may have so far. If you’re having trouble understanding the material, need help reviewing for an exam, need clarification on writing a paper, etc., your professor is the one you want to talk to. They can clear up any confusion and help keep you on track. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to talk to them outside of class–not only are professors a wealth of knowledge, but those connections can come in handy later if/when you need a recommendation.

5) DO Talk to Your Advisor

Planning your courses and directing your career path early on are very important. Talking to an advisor can help you understand what classes you still need, any gaps or incompletes on your transcript and provide some much needed direction (if need be) for your school career path. They can also provide information about who you need to talk to about taking further steps outside of your department (e.g. Internships).

6) DO Assess Where You Stand

Pretty self-explanatory, but it’s never a bad idea to check your grades and see how you’re doing in your classes. It can also help determine if you need to drop a class before the drop date comes and goes.

Important dates for your planner:

Last day to drop: Oct. 28

Registration for spring: Begins Nov. 1

Thanksgiving break: Nov. 27-Dec. 1

Last Day of Classes: Dec. 9

Finals: Dec. 11-Dec. 17

December Commencement: Dec. 19

These are just some friendly reminders to help you make it through the semester. We may be halfway done but that doesn’t mean we can lose steam just yet. Let’s finish out the semester strong!
