After more than three hours of debate extending into early Wednesday morning, four court cases surrounding the SGA elections were resolved and the winners of the election were announced. The candidates for the SGA top four positions from the CardVision slate won over the CardsUnite slate.

Of all the votes cast for the top four positions, members of CardVision beat CardsUnite by an average of 16 percent. A variety of other senators from both slates were also elected.

”I felt that the only reason I won was because I had such a great team behind me,” said Justin Brandt, the new SGA president elect. “We believe that there’s a reason that our team won so many of our elections, because we worked and we campaigned as a team and we stand for the same things.”

Kurtis Frizzell, this year’s president said he’s “glad we finally know who the people who are going to replace us are. That’s an exciting moment.”

Only one of the four cases presented in SGA court was upheld, ultimately a decision was made by a board of six judges to dock 6.5 percent of the vote from CardsUnite after they were found to have improperly filed their campaign service reports.

Even if CardsUnite members were spared the 6.5 percent voting deduction, they still would not have had enough votes to win.

Chief Justice Brandon McReynolds oversaw the violation cases.

“I think that when we look back at it, this is always an election of the students,” he said. “And we always want to make sure the election process is as fair as possible for any student.”
