Jazz performance at the School of Music
The University of Louisville School of Music’s Jazz Ensemble I will be performing Tuesday, April 11.
Jazz Ensemble I, an ensemble composed of University of Louisville students, is under the direction of School of Music Associate Professor John La Barbera. La Barbera is a two time recipient of the National Endowment For the Arts award for Jazz Composition. The Ensemble performs a variety of works, both contemporary and traditional.
The concert will be held at the Margaret Comstock Concert Hall in the School of Music from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. It is free of charge.

Celebrate Earth Day at the Student Activties Center
In honor of Earth Day, the Student Activities Board is hosting an Earth Day Festival Tuesday, April 18. Free giveaways, free organic lunch and hot air balloon rides are among the events scheduled.
The festival will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will be located on the Student Activites Center West Lawn at the University of Louisville.

Spring BFA exhibit at university galleries
The University of Louisville Allen R. Hite Institute of Fine Arts’ first undergraduate Spring BFA Exhibition will be on display until Saturday April 15.
The show is a culmination of four years work for graduating seniors at the university. A variety of visual arts mediums are on exhibit, including sculpture, photography, painting and glass art. A second exhibit featuring work from the remaining graduates opens Thursday, April 20.
The exhibit is located at the Morris B. Belknap Gallery, Dario A. Covi Gallery, and Gallery X in Schneider Hall on the U of L campus.

Shakespeare’s ‘Winters Tale opens at University Playhouse
The William Shakespeare play “A Winter’s Tale” will be open Wednesday, April 19 at the University of Louisville Playhouse on Cardinal Blvd.
The performance, directed by guest artist Dennis Krausnick who founded Shakespeare and Company in Lenox, Mass. The actors weave a tale of jealousy, romance and in the end, hope, through the story of a bitter, old king and his young daughter.
The play will run from April 19 to April 23. Performances will begin at 8 p.m. Wed.-Fri. and Sun., and also at 3 p.m. Sat. and Sun. Tickets are $10, $9 for seniors and U of L faculty and staff, and $7 for students.

Staged readings of short plays at Thrust Theatre
The University of Louisville’s Thrust theatre will be hosting “6 Women Turning 60 in 2006: A Celebration of the Energy and Creativity of the Older Woman Artist” beginning on Friday, April 14.
In association with The Women’s Theatre project, “6 Women Turning 60 in 2006” is a traveling play festival featuring short plays written by female Baby-Boomer playwrights. The festival is touring throughout the United States.
Organized by award-winning playwrights Donna Guthrie and Nancy Gall-Clayton, the festival celebrates the older female artist and answers subtle sexism and narrowmindedness with humor and intelligence.
Following each play, audience members will enjoy birthday cake and a discussion with the playwrights, cast, and director.
An art exhibit and book signings featuring Kentucky women will be on display.
The festival will be performed Friday, April 14 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the University of Louisville’s Thrust Theatre. Tickets are $10/ $6 for seniors and free for students.

Student Activities Board offers Hip-hop dance lessons
Hip-hop dance lessons will be provided Wednesday, April 12 in the Student Activities Center gym at the University of Louisville. The lessons will be given from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and are free of charge.

West Louisville Boys Choir sings at Jazz Factory
The West Louisville Boys Choir will be performing at the Jazz Factory, 815 W. Market Street, on Wednesday, April 15.
The choir features boys from the ages of nine to eighteen who have competed for a spot in the group against hundreds of their peers. The members are given training in music history. They often perform with nationally- and internationally-reknowed musicians.
The choir will be presenting two shows of vocal jazz Wednesday to raise money for their upcoing 2007 trip to perform in Japan. The ability to perform outside of the U.S. is an integral learning experience and allows the members of the choir to expand their knowledge of music.
The performances are at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $7.50, all ticket sales and a percentage of food and drink sales will benefit the choir.
