Swimming and Diving

The next event for the swimming and diving team will be the Big East championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The University of Louisville swimming and diving team fell to Indiana University on Friday, Feb. 1 in both the men’s and women’s divisions. The meet, held at the Ralph Wright Natatorium, marked the last home meet of the dual season.

“Our women battled hard and swam well and held off many of IU’s charges,” said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero after the meet. “On the men’s side, however, we got the best of IU last year, and they got us back tonight. We thought we had a chance to get them but they came in ranked really high, and although we played to our strengths, a few things got away here and there.”

Despite the loss, Albiero felt that the teams competed well.

“The score is not indicative of how close a lot of the races were,” he added.

The next event for the swimming and diving team will come on Wednesday, Feb. 27 where the men and women will compete in the Big East championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Albiero and the swimming and diving team know that it will take hard work and discipline to prepare for this next challenge.

“We all need to sharpen up as we prepare for championship time,” Albiero said.

Track and Field

Freshman Edwin Kibichiy earned a top five school record in the distance event during Saturday’s Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Indiana. Kibichiy, a distance runner from Kenya, finished the 3,000 meter race in 8:08.70. In addition to being his season best, this time ranks as the fifth fastest finish in school history. This time also ranks as one of the top 30 in the nation.

Along with Kibichiy’s school record, the U of L track and field teams registered nine top five finishes.

The track and field team will compete in the Big East Indoor Championships on Feb. 16-17. The University of Louisville track and field team currently holds 30 qualifying marks on the men’s side and 24 qualifying marks on the women’s side. The championships, which stand as the next event for the team, will be held at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
