What happens when a supervillain defeats the superhero only to realize that life isn’t quite so meaningful without that same superhero?  That, ladies and gentlemen, is the plot of “Megamind.”  The rivalry between Megamind and Metro Man began long ago when their alien capsules crashed into each other as they made their way toward Earth, leading to Megamind being found and adopted by prison inmates whereas Metro Man grew up in the lap of luxury.  The rivalry continued in school until Megamind ultimately blew it up and was sent back to prison.  As Megamind narrates, “Our battles quickly got more elaborate. He would win some, I would ALMOST win others! He took the name: Metro Man, defender of Metro City. I decided to pick something a little more humble: MegaMind, incredibly handsome criminal genius and master of all villainy!”

The humor of the entire film was set early by the main character.  During the epic battle which ultimately leads to Metro Man’s supposed death, the rapport between the rivals is hilarious:

Megamind: In case you’ve noticed, you’ve fallen right into my trap!

Metro Man: You can’t trap justice! It’s an idea, a BELIEF!

Megamind: Even the most heartfelt belief can get corroded with crime!

Metro Man: Justice is a non-corrosive metal!

Megamind: But metals can be melted, by the heat of revanche!

Metro Man: It’s REVENGE, and it’s best served cold!

Megamind: But it can be easily reheated, in the microwave of evil!

Metro Man: Well, I think your warranty’s about to expire!

Megamind: Maybe I got an extended warranty!

Metro Man: Warranties are invalid, if used beyond their intended purpose!

Although the star of the film, Will Ferrell, has produced some over the top comedies that leave

the audience anything but amused, this film was hilarious and entertaining without trying too hard.  The superhero and supervillain themes remind the watcher of Pixar’s “The Incredibles” without some of the more mature themes that “The Incredibles” brings to the audience.  “Megamind” is very much a children’s film.  It is light-hearted, funny, and brings a climax to the film without becoming too dark or depressing.  The pace is action packed allowing viewers, especially small children, to remain engaged in the plot.

The film was directed by Tom McGath and stars the voice talents of Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tiny Fey, David Cross, and Jonah Hill.  The plot follows Megamind after the demise of his nemesis Metro Man.  In order to bring meaning back to his life, he attempts to create another superhero.  However, human nature, as well as surprising romantic twists, brings complications to Megamind’s plot.

The humor was the major draw of the film.  However, the film also provided a superb soundtrack.  Tracks include ACDC’s “Highway to Hell,” and Michael Jackson’s “Bad” among numerous other chart toppers.  Will Ferrell of course stood out in his humor; his accents and timing bring humor to the most mediocre line.  However, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt come close to stealing the show at times.  Tina Fey’s sarcastic yet nonchalant tone engages the viewer.  Brad Pitt’s character presents a farce of the common hero stereotype, allowing any viewer familiar with tales of Superman to find humor in the tiniest nuances of his actions.

“Megamind” succeeded in bringing humor and fun to its audience.  It is presented in both 3D and 2D; however, 3D presentation is not necessary for full enjoyment of the film.  “Megamind” is a mega-success and well worth a trip to the theater!
