Student charged for attempted carjacking

University of Louisville engineering student Maytham Khamees was charged with assault and robbery Friday, Oct. 23.  He plead not guilty to both charges.
According to local news reports, a woman stopped and allegedly asked Khamees for directions.  The victim told local news stations that Khamees then jumped in the passenger seat of her car.  She began to honk the horn and yell.  At this point, Khamees allegedly beat her head on the steering wheel, before pushing her out the driver’s side door.  He drove off, dragging her for a bit.  Then he apparently hit something, blowing out the tires to the car.  He then took off running, and police apprehended him under the I-65 bridge on Warnock St.
Neither a crime alert nor a crime notification was issued for the event.
In an e-mail message, U of L spokesman John Drees said, “We didn’t issue a crime alert because the event was over within a few minutes. The lone suspect was apprehended immediately, and there was no threat to our students.”
