The University of Louisville’s Speed Scientific School presented its 71st annual Engineers’ Days this past Friday and Saturday. These events were designed to allow individuals from every department to flaunt their engineering talents. Approximantly 30 exhibits were on display for students and faculty to view.

Engineers’ Days is also an opportunity for high school students from schools such as Saint Xaiver, Pleasure Ridge Park and Oldham County High School to participate and learn what exactly engineering entails. Twenty students from each school are chosen to join in the events and compete in events such as the egg drop and the carbon dioxide balloon fill.

Aaron Hatfield, president of the Speed School Student Council and Graduate Student in Computer Engineering and Computer Science says, “E days bring different things to different groups, it gives high school students engineering experience to know if they might what to go to Speed School, and it is a chance for the public to see what Speed School is envolved with and gives them an image of what speed school actually is.”

Each department puts together a number of exhibits evolving around what is listed in their classroom cirriculum.

“Usually exhibits are thesis projects,” says Hatfield, “Not many projects are done specifically for Engineers’ Days.”

Steven Watson, participant and Freshman Mechanical Engineering major states, “It gives people a chance to see what speed school is all about.”

Cash is a small incentives for students participating in this two-day event. All exhibits are judged overall with $300 going to first place, $200 for second and $100 for first. There is also a departmental award for the department who has the best overall presentation.

“I think people have many misconceptions, or just plain don’t know what we do,” says senior chemical engineering major Tim Learn, “we show them hard parctical applications of what engineers really do.”

These events take place during National Engineer’s Week and continues to be a success. Kick off for this week began with the first annual date auction and will conclude on March 2 with the Engineers’ Ball held on the Star of Louisville.
