In the course of over two decades on this planet, I have eaten a number of different turkey sandwiches. What that number is, I cannot say, but I would estimate it to be somewhere above 12. Some of these sandwiches have been dressed with fancy mustard. Some of them have been plain. Some have even been topped with cereal and strawberry jam. None, however, has come close to being as delicious as a smoked turkey sandwich from Morris’ Liquors & Deli.

Located at the intersection of Taylorsville Road and Bardstown Road, Morris’ is a small establishment, seating maybe 10 people inside and about six outside. It’s not the sort of place one takes a large group for lunch, but it is an excellent choice if you’ve only got a couple of people with you. The size seems like a drawback at first, but in truth it only adds to the general atmosphere.

There is definitely a homey feel to the deli. It comes across as the classic neighborhood place. The staff is friendly and there are almost always a few elderly patrons sitting at the bar or one of the tables reading a newspaper or watching television. It’s almost picturesque.

Of course, atmosphere means little if the food is bad. Fortunately, Morris’ serves quite possibly the best deli food available in Louisville. There are no already assembled sandwiches – the customer selects every component. The variety of meats, toppings and spreads is staggering. Essentially, any kind of sandwich you can imagine can be prepared. Personally, I go with two smoked turkey and baked ham sandwiches on whole wheat, with tomatoes and honey mustard. Morris’ is one of few places that offer smoked turkey that actually tastes smoked, making a sandwich with turkey too good to pass up.

In terms of side dishes, the barbecue beans are a great option, though they could use a little salt. For those looking for something healthier, the pasta salad is excellent. Morris’ also offers a number of soups, including chili, if sandwiches are not what you are looking for. Perhaps most importantly, a sandwich and a side will only cost you about $4.

It will probably excite some to know that Morris’ is also quite an extensive liquor store, in addition to being an excellent deli. For its small size, Morris’ selection is varied. No matter what the occasion, it won’t leave you wanting more.

Whether you are looking for a sit-down lunch with a quiet neighborhood feel, or a cheap takeout lunch, Morris’ Liquors & Deli is a great choice. The sandwiches are easily the best in town, at a price that is too good to pass up.
