The Academic Vice President position was decided last Wednesday in a run-off election between Dave Kaelin and John Daniel, with Daniel coming out on top by a vote of 201 to Kaelin’s 193.

The run-off came after neither candidate achieved forty percent of the vote in the first SGA election. The run-off takes the top two candidates and pits them against each other in order to get a clearer view of who the students want to elect.

The first election was clouded by controversy, as the Supreme Court announced the winner of the AVP race three times, each time with different results. Ultimately, Daniel and Kaelin qualified for the run-off, with Chris Johnson coming in a close third.

A tired Daniel said of the election, “I’m glad it’s over,” but added, “I think it was fair.”

Daniel has already begun preparing for his term in office by meeting with the current Academic Vice-President, Jihaad Abdul-Majid, to “plan the transition process.”

The run-off’s completion comes as a relief to many of the newly elected who are looking toward the future.

Chris Marlin, current SAB movie chair and SGA President-elect said of Daniel’s addition to the executive board, “We [Marlin and other newly elected board members] are feeling really good–we are looking forward to next year. The Senators elected have lots of experience and we can accomplish a lot working with them.”
