Speculation surrounding the vacant head coaching position for the University of Louisville football team has been circulating since Steve Kragthorpe was fired late last week. All that speculation could soon be put to rest. U of L Sports Information Director Kenny Klein confirmed that athletic director Tom Jurich traveled to Florida on Sunday, after receiving permission to speak with the University of Florida’s defensive coordinator, Charlie Strong, about the vacant position.
Strong has never officially served in a head coaching capacity before, although he did fill in as interim head coach for one game in 2004, after former Gators head coach Ron Zook was fired mid-season. Under Strong’s tutelage, the Florida defense has remained ranked first in the NCAA during the regular season, with the fewest yards and points allowed.
Sources have also stated that an announcement is expected as early as this week regarding the position. Klein confirmed that no offer was made to Strong during the meeting between he and Jurich.
Jurich told ESPN.com that talks between he and Strong would continue over the phone on Dec. 7 and 8.
