Softball finishes 2-2 in weekend tourneyBy Catherine Laroche

The University of Louisville softball team broke even in the Courtyard Marriott Red & Black Classic over the weekend. Louisville hosted the tournament and went 2-2 in three days.

“It has been a difficult weekend. We’ve done a lot of things well, but haven’t been able to put them together,” U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall said.

Louisville opened the round robin tournament against Ball State. Senior Sara Bausher started the Louisville offensive onslaught with a two-run home run.

Junior first baseman Michelle Vasquez hit a home run in the second, her third home run of the season.

The Cards were too much for Ball State to handle. Louisville won 5-0. Catherine Bishop earned the win and only allowed three hits while striking out seven in seven innings. Lacy Wood went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a run, while Bausher went 2-for-3 with a home run, one run scored and four RBI.

Louisville wasn’t as lucky in their Friday night match against Missouri, falling 4-0 to the No. 24 team in the nation.

Missouri got on the scoreboard first with a 2-0 lead. The Tigers added two more runs to win the game.

U of L’s Aja Sherman took the loss, and allowed four earned runs on six hits, striking out eight in seven innings.

The Cards fell 5-3 to the Hawkeyes on Saturday.

“We hit the ball well, but were not able to push runs across the plate,” Pearsall said. “When we play well in one area, we seem to falter in another. We are trying to find the right key to having a complete game and when we’re able to do that, we’ll be a more successful team.”
