The U of L Resident Student Association swept the recent KARH awards ceremony, nabbing five of the seven possible awards. The University of Kentucky and Murray State University also competed in the regional battle among on-campus resident organizations.

U of L’s RSA took home the coveted School of the Year award, as well as the award for Best Delegation. Individual awards were also given for Best Display, which went to sophomore Theatre Arts major Jacinta Hagans; the First Year Experience Award, to freshman Business Management major Justin Morehead; and the National Communications Coordinator Award, which junior Psychology major and RSA executive board member C.B. Yates took home.

John Daniel, junior Political Science major and RSA President, said that winning these awards means more recognition for the RSA, both nationally and on campus. “We’re really trying to make the RSA a top-notch organization,” he said. “Our goal is to be as big as SGA.”

Daniel was proud to be recognized as School of the Year. “That’s the big one,” he said. “That’s the one everybody tries to get. It makes housing look good, and I’m just happy we did it.”

Morehead, President of the Miller Hall council, was obligated to disperse the credit for his award among his peers. “I was able to win because of the rest of my hall council,” he said. “Without them, I wouldn’t have been able to win this.”

While some students may see the RSA as relevant only to those living on campus, Daniel was quick to point out that is simply not true. “We’re trying to make the RSA more campus-based,” he said. The RSA sponsors regular on-campus events open to all students, not exclusively on-campus residents.

RSA Executive elections for these positions are held annually in April after the SGA elections.

Likewise, every September each residence hall holds elections for its own hall council. The separate hall councils are comprised of a President, a Vice President, a Treasurer, and a Public Relations officer, as well as several representatives. The respective hall councils vote for the RSA board.
