When it comes to college, knowing the basics of parking policies can eliminate a lot of unnecessary stress. By understanding the general rules for parking on and around campus, students can avoid parking ticket fines and the hassle of having a car towed.
*The easiest way to avoid a parking ticket is to buy a permit at the start of the semester. Make sure to understand what parking areas are assigned to each color pass. The process for obtaining a parking permit has been simplified for the coming semester. Permits will now be mailed to students, helping eliminate the usual rush at the start of the semester.
*A parking permit does not guarantee that a student will not receive a ticket. The permit must be displayed from the rearview mirror and cannot be obstructed by any other items. If the permit is not clearly visible, parking officials have reason to write a ticket. If a vehicle is not parked within the lines of a clearly marked parking space, it is also grounds for a citation.
*Students must be attentive to all signs displayed in parking areas. During special events there may be temporary signs that are posted, providing alternative parking areas. Failure to comply with the new instructions could result in a fine or removal of the vehicle.
*Citations must be paid in a timely manner. Students will not be allowed to purchase another parking permit if they have not paid their tickets. Additionally, a hold will be placed on the student’s university account. This hold prevents the student from registering for classes and from receiving an official transcript.
*Failure to pay multiple citations may result in the impoundment of the vehicle. In some cases, a warning may be issued to the student prior to the towing of the vehicle. To avoid impoundment, all fines must be paid within 24 hours after the warning is given.
*There are different regulations for parking on and off campus. Students must be aware of the rules for any area in which they are parking. In the event that a student’s car is towed, it is necessary to determine if the car was towed from a campus location or from a location adjacent to campus. Cars towed from campus will be sent to the University of Louisville tow lot on Arthur Street. Cars towed from city streets and other locations will be sent to the city tow lot on Frankfort Avenue.
*Any questions about parking issues can be directed to the parking office at (502)852 –PARK.
