Students were told to evacuate the Ekstrom and Kornhauser Libraries at around 2 p.m. on Jan. 12.

At 2:15 p.m., the university sent a RAVE Alert that ULPD was responding to a “safety concern” at the Ekstrom and Kornhauser libraries.

Library faculty members outside of Ekstrom stated that police were responding to a bomb threat, but no official university statement regarding this was made.

“We have a safety concern related to the Ekstrom, Kornhauser and Law Libraries. We’re asking people to avoid the areas,” said U of L Interim Vice President of Communications and Marketing John Karman when asked about the potential of a bomb threat.

Faculty and police at Ekstrom told a small crowd of students that the library could be closed for up to two hours.

Murray State University closed multiple buildings after receiving a bomb threat toward a university library that morning. Murray State University sent a university-wide email that the threat was likely a hoax, but cancelled classes for the day out of caution.

No threats at other Kentucky universities have been reported at the time of publishing.

At 3:52 PM, the threat was cleared, and activities at campus libraries resumed.

U of L Office of Communications and Marketing confirmed it was a bomb threat that was “part of a broader threat that impacted a number of universities throughout the country.”
