The Aug 30 shooting at The Arch Apartments has left some U of L students uneasy with their living arrangement.

Just before 7 p.m., police officers were flagged down outside the apartment complex on South Fourth Street, which is privately owned and targeted towards students.

Arch resident and U of L student Brooklyn Hansford was in the building at the time of the shooting. “It is bothersome to know that there was a shooting I didn’t even know about happen less than 100 feet from me.” While LMPD has not confirmed this, Hansford believes the shooting occurred on the floor where she lives.

“I thought it was just around the corner, or across the street at least. But when I walked down the hallway to this crime scene and crime scene tape I was just in shock,” Hansford said.

The Arch is located in  LMPD’s fourth division which patrols U of L, Old Louisville, Germantown, South Louisville and more. Though LMPD patrols the area, some Arch residents, such as Antonn Watkins, feel the neighborhood is unsafe.

“It’s in the back of my mind, like I don’t just walk around here or go to the store late at night or nothing like that,” Watkins said. “I see police up around here all the time, flying up and down here.”

Some residents are just relieved it wasn’t something they were involved in. Like Hansford, many didn’t even know it was going on. Sophomore Aysia Newton said, “I’m just glad that I was in my apartment, with my cat, at the time of the shooting.”

Arch employees declined to comment on the incident or how they felt in its aftermath.
