U of L among military friendly
The University of Louisville has been recognized for its continued efforts in aiding the transition for veterans back into civilian lifestyle. Of the nation’s 7,000 colleges, universities and trade schools, only 15 percent received the distinction. The newly opened Office of Military and Veteran Student Services has helped the efforts, with its counseling services on issues related to school, including classes, enrollment and financial aid.
Speed School dean to step down
The dean of the J.B. Speed School of Engineering, Mickey Wilhelm, announced that he would be stepping down from his position, effective June 30, 2011. As a faculty member at Speed School since 1975 and dean for six of those years, Wilhelm has been integral in the success Speed School has experienced in that time. During his time as dean, the average ACT score for entering freshmen increased, there was a 200 percent increase in Ph.D. graduates and $33.5 million was raised for the school. Wilhelm will work with U of L’s central administration in a consulting capacity for the 2011-2012 year and will return to faculty following a sabbatical.
U of L to continue smoke-free efforts
The smoke-free campus efforts continue at U of L, in hopes to meet the Nov. 18 deadline, which will eliminate all smoking on the Belknap Campus. Over half of the designated smoking areas on Belknap Campus were removed in July. The university is seeking to help students, faculty and staff who want to quit smoking, by teaming up with the Kentucky Cancer Program. Individuals who choose to smoke on sidewalks along city streets must be at least 50 feet from entrances to university buildings.
