After entering the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 4-1 and being held to just four hits in the first six innings, sophomore second baseman Ryan Wright stepped to the plate. Trailing 4-2 at this point with runners on first and second and two outs, Wright sent a 1-0 pitch from West Virginia University reliever out of the park for his 15th home run of the season.

This three-run homer ended up being the game-winning shot as the Cards never looked back and went on to score 10 unanswered in an 11-4 first round victory on May 26.

Prior to Wright’s home run, freshman Zak Wasserman led off the inning with a walk and was replaced with pinch runner freshman Kyle Grieshaber. Grieshaber moved to second on his seventh stolen base of the year and senior short stop Adam Duvall reached base on a critical two-out fielding error by the WVU third baseman. Senior first baseman Andrew Clark helped Grieshaber score with a RBI single up the middle that cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Cards advanced to play the fourth seeded St. John’s University today (May 27) at 8 p.m.
