Spring: a time when seasonal depression is fading, neutral tones are being replaced by bright hues, and the weather is changing from frigid temperatures and gloomy clouds to warmth and sunshine. With so much studying to do for finals that are creeping up, a college student can have a hard time enjoying the changing season. Many students are cooped up in the library and only see sunlight when walking to class, to the Student Activities Center to grab a quick lunch, and then back to the library. It can be hard to balance the urge for spending time outdoors with the need for productive behavior. Sure, there needs to be time for recreation, but making some changes to daily routines can add a little “spring” into your day.
1. Take your homework outside.
If it is not too windy, take your homework outside. There are plenty of picnic tables and benches around campus. Outside of the Tulip Tree Cafe, the tables are in the sunlight most of the day. Even if it is a little chilly, the warmth of the sun will make it ideal weather to work on schoolwork.
2. Take your workout outdoors.
Walking or running outdoors is also an easy way to incorporate the outdoors into your routine. On nice days, try working out down at Waterfront Park. There are perfect paths for biking or jogging. The wind coming off the river is sometimes cool, so make sure to dock a few degrees off the temperature outside when planning what to wear. There are plenty of parking spots along the waterfront, making it accessible to everyone. The view is beautiful and this is a great way to make the best of living near the river.
3. Cook or eat outside.
Although you might not have a lot of time, eating outdoors can be the perfect break from a stressful day. Try to take a 20-minute relaxing lunch or dinner break. At this point in the year, the sun is still shining at dinnertime, giving you two opportunities to spend time outdoors. Packing a lunch and then eating it under a shady tree can also be very enjoyable.
Also, try cooking outdoors. If you live on campus, there are a few outdoor grills available. Many apartment complexes also have grills nearby. Take advantage of this and make some burgers on an actual grill instead of staying cooped up inside and using a George Foreman.
4. Travel the scenic route.
By giving yourself some extra time, you could take the long way to campus in order to enjoy the weather more. Those who live within walking or biking distance should find different paths to travel to class. Switching up the path you walk can take your routine to the next level. The extra five minutes of taking a longer route would give you more time outdoors before having to be stuck inside during a lecture for an hour.
5. Take weekend recreation outdoors.
During the week, outside activity can be minimal, but weekend plans can be made to make the most of the weather. Some ideas for activities include hosting a barbecue, planning an overnight camping trip with friends, having a Wiffle Ball tournament, and simply have a party with lawn chairs set up outside. Spring weather can be unpredictable, so pay attention to the weather and find the best day on the weekend to spend time outside.
