On Tuesday, Nov. 17, the Student Government Association convened its Senate meeting. The Senate, in a surprise move, put aside tradition and carried out a first reading of the proposed SGA budget for the 2010-2011 school year. Typically, the Senate is held subject to a rule requiring 48 hours to pass, after the budget is drafted, before it is given its first reading. According to Stephanie Bonenberger, executive vice president of SGA, this rule was set aside, with the intention of expediting the process, so the budget could be passed by the end of the semester.
The overall size of the budget stayed the same, at a total of $476,000. The majority of changes came in the allocation of funds.
SGA’s central administration, in a surprising move, cut its personal budget from the $121,580 it currently operates under, to only $90,000 for the next year. As a result, the Student Activities Board budget is expected to increase by $10,000, to $160,000. SGA’s Club Programming Committee’s budget is also expected to increase, to a new high of $65,000.
A second reading of the budget will be given at the next Senate meeting, on Tuesday Dec. 1.
