U of L student named Rhodes Scholar
After the final round of interviews, held on Saturday, Nov. 21, University of Louisville graduate Monica Marks was named as one of this year’s 32 Rhodes Scholars. Marks graduated in May 2009, with a triple major in political science, women and gender studies and philosophy.
According to the Rhodes Scholar Web site, Marks is the fourth U of L student to receive this award, and the first female from the university. This award will allow Marks to study at Oxford University in London for a period of 2 years, as she works toward a graduate degree. She intends to receive a masters in philosophy as well as modern Middle Eastern culture.
Cards’ leading rusher scheduled for surgery
The University of Louisville football team’s leading rusher, sophomore running back Victor Anderson, is scheduled to have shoulder surgery on Tuesday, Nov. 24. As a result, he will have to miss the Cardinals’ season finale against Rutgers on Friday, Nov. 27.
According to statements made by head coach Steve Kragthorpe during the Big East teleconference last week, Anderson is suffering from a shoulder separation that has not healed as well as was hoped. Anderson has already missed quite a bit of play time throughout the season, and did not play at all in the match-ups against Arkansas State and West Virginia.
In his absence, the Cards’ ground game has been handled primarily by redshirt freshman running back Darius Ashley. Ashley currently needs less than 60 yards to surpass Anderson as the team’s leading rusher. He will attempt to do this in the final game of the year, against Rutgers, as the team will not be making a bowl appearance.
