I have had a right taken away from me when I am on campus. The right I am referring to is the right to carry a weapon, concealed or not, to protect myself and others if necessary. Many people think that it is against the law to carry a weapon on campus. This is not the case. Under state and federal law it is only illegal to carry a weapon on the grounds of grade schools and high schools among other locations. Secondary education facilities are not included. The state leaves it up to the universities to create their own policies about weapons on their campuses. So basically, if a student were to be caught with a weapon on campus they would not be punished criminally, they would only be punished by the university.
While I partially understand the university’s stance on weapons, I disagree with their policies and believe they were created with a lack of understanding of the law. I also think that since the university is owned by the state they should have to abide by the laws of the state.
