One-third cafe, one-third art gallery and one-third bar, Derby City Espresso may be redefining what it means to be a coffeehouse. Upon entering Derby City, visitors will find a parrot cage on their left and a fish aquarium on the right, indications that this is not your usual spot to grab a cup of java.
The art displayed in Derby City is an eclectic mix of antiques, Americana souvenirs, Star Wars action figures, painted skateboards and other local art.
Along with the diverse artistic setting, Derby City differs from many other coffee shops because it sells alcohol as well as espressos.
“I lived in Italy for many years and rely on that experience to make espresso in the Italian fashion,” said owner Matthew Landan. “But we also sell 40 different kinds of tea and a variety of domestic and imported beer.”
