Students everywhere crave something new when it comes to the limited dining options offered on their meal plans. The University of Louisville promised to fulfill this yearning with new restaurant options on campus this fall. One new option is Einstein Bros. Bagels. The restaurant is located in the Humanities Building, where the lobby used to be. The renovations have been extensive, with hanging lamps and small tables, giving it a coffee shop feel.
However, when it comes to ordering, confusion reigns. There are supposed to be two lines: one where you order and one where you pick up your order. But the space is limited and there are no signs letting customers know this. Sometimes wayward customers stand in the pickup line until they get to the register. Only then do they discover that they have to start all over to order. This happened several times while I was there.
The menu offers breakfast, hot and cold sandwiches and a variety of salads, bagels and pastries. The bagel price is an affordable 99 cents.
However, I chose the roasted veggie wrap and my dining companion chose the Santa Fe Wrap. Both wraps came out perfectly hot. Mine was filled with roasted squash, zucchini, onions, tomatoes and provolone cheese, with the garden shmear, their special spread, in a whole wheat wrap. It was delicious. The wrap was the right size to be filling, without being too much. And the vegetables and cheese were complimentary to each other. I would recommend grabbing a lot of napkins, as the melted shmear had a tendency to leak from every crease in the tortilla.
My friend’s Santa Fe wrap was also on a whole wheat wrap and was filled with turkey sausage, eggs, salsa, jalapeño cream cheese and pepper jack cheese. He thought the eggs were a good consistency and the jalapeño cream cheese made it pleasantly spicy. Combined, the two wraps cost $11.58, which, in my opinion and many others’ I’ve heard, is a little pricey for a student lunch. However, I would say that the quality was worth the extra expense.
