Located in a downtown metropolitan area, University of Louisville students should be knowledgeable of certain roads on and around campus to help them reach their destinations easier.
One piece of advice is to take various ways to and from campus to better acquaint yourself with the geographic location of the campus.
“When I first moved downtown, my roommate and I would take different routes home in order to learn the layout of the roads around campus,” said Eric Ford, a junior marketing major. “Getting lost happens and driving downtown can be intimidating, but one-way streets can easily turn you back around to get home, or at least take you to a street you recognize.”
There are major roadways that should be recognized and well-known in order to travel around town without problems. According to junior civil engineering major Alex Frommeyer, the most important roads to know around campus are Eastern Parkway, Preston Highway and Bardstown Road.
“Bardstown Road is the cultural epicenter of the east end of Louisville,” Frommeyer said. “Preston has a wealth of activities and restaurants, and Eastern Parkway provides access to many off-campus housing options.”
“[Third Street and Central Avenue] have small shopping centers for food, plus Kroger for any other needs,” Ford said. “Eastern Parkway has to be on the list because it can take you to Bardstown Road and runs right into campus.”
According to Frommeyer, students should walk around and enjoy Bardstown Road because it contains some of the most interesting shops and eateries in the whole city.
Ford also gives insight about the driving habits of Louisville drivers.
“Louisville drivers are timid and don’t always pay attention,” Ford said. “They are timid in the sense they would rather slow down to merge or break on an on ramp rather than accelerating to merge effectively. So do not tailgate Kentucky drivers. They love to slam on their brakes for no apparent reason.”
