There is more to February than Valentine’s Day and Super Bowl Sunday; it also marks the beginning of the scholarship opportunities at the University of Louisville,
This is without a doubt, the perfect opportunity to shave some dollars from the increasing cost of college tuition.
The journey begins online at U of L’s financial aid Web site. Here are some of the different types of scholarships, assistantships and fellowships that are listed and explained.
Continuing Undergraduate
Scholarship:
Students pursuing their undergraduate degrees are eligible for this scholarship, though eligible students must have between 24 and 122 credit hours, a 3.0 cumulative GPA and must be taking at least six credit hours for the semester. Log in to ULink, locate the name of the scholarship and after a few clicks the submission will be over.
Blaine Norton, a freshman engineer major, took advantage of this.
“It helped me a lot because it eased pressure and reliability on my parents,” Norton said, though he is “still looking for more.” The deadline for this application is March 15, and the amount of the award depends on available funds and credit hours.
The Hilda Threlkeld Scholarship Fund of the University of Louisville’s Women Club:
Students with nine credit hours completed at U of L with limited financial resources based on the Office of Financial Aid review of a current Free Application for Student Aid may apply for this scholarship.
The U of L Women’s Club awards two $500 scholarships and the application may be found in the U of L Financial Aid Web site, but only before Feb. 15.
Ford Motor Company/EEOC
Scholarship:
Minorities and women related directly or indirectly to Ford and residents of the Commonwealth of Kentucky are eligible for this scholarship, although, the company discloses in its application form that individuals unrelated to the company will be considered if there is a lack of submission on behalf of the above-mentioned groups.
Applicants must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and ACT composite of 20 or a college cumulative GPA of 2.5. Ford Motor will accept submissions until April 15.
The J. Gorman and Mary E. Conliffe Scholarship:
The online application highlights the importance of “a student who demonstrates academic promise but faces documented financial limitations in the pursuit of a degree.” If the above criteria are met, a 2.5 GPA has been maintained throughout undergraduate school and the student participates in 10 hours of volunteer service, this scholarship can cover all undergraduate school costs. The deadline is also April 15.
There are a number of other scholarship opportunities including The Kentucky Health Systems Agency-West Scholarship Fund which targets health-related major students.
The New Beginning Scholarship Fund focuses on students returning to college and the Zonta Club of Louisville Inez Webb Award has single mothers in mind.
Additionally, The U of L Honors Program has scholarships available for transfer students.
Roberto Montañez, a senior marketing major, said, “I was ineligible for many of the opportunities. I did however, find the Continuing Undergraduate Scholarship. It was easy to apply for and it helped me cover some of my tuition costs.”
All of the details for scholarships, as well as copies of the applications are available in PDF format for students to download and complete.
They may be found online at the financial aid’s Web site, https://vhost.louisville.edu/student/services/fin-aid/devfinaid/scholarships/index.php, or in their office in room 110 of the Houchens Building.
