I hate to put a damper on the party, but I feel I must. Besides, why be positive when you can be negative? Louisville football is going to get screwed right out of the national title game. And what I mean by the word “screwed” is that the Cards are going to do everything they need to do but still get left out. I do not know how it will happen or when, but it will. I’m sorry but that is just how it is going to be. I do not want it to happen but the Cards will fall victim to the BCS just like Auburn two years ago and Oregon before them.
But let’s look at the bright side, say we do run the table, which I believe we will, do you think we deserve a shot at the title? I certainly do, but everybody else out side the state of Kentucky will think otherwise, the media especially. You see, it is almost as if Cardinal football will be punished this year because we do not have the football tradition that those one loss SEC schools have. Our history of football does not have the names of Griffin, Hayes and George like the team sitting atop the football world in Columbus. And believe me, this talk has already begun.
Before I went to bed on Thursday night I heard it on the radio. Friday morning when I woke up I started hearing it again. Statements like “Do you really think Louisville is worthy of being the number two team in the country?” and “What would you think if the Louisville Cardinals were in the national championship, does that not seem right?” And believe me, even after we go into Rutgers and beat them and then continue on doing the same thing until our last game of the year against UConn, our doubters will get louder and louder.
What more can we do? As of this week we play in the third best conference according to the Sagarin Ratings (trailing only the Pac-10 and SEC), we have shown the country on the national level that we are more than just a run-and-shoot offensive minded team. We have the team speed and talent to grind it out with the big boys and showcased it against the Mountaineers. What more do you want from us?
I only see one scenario that leaves the Cards making plans for a trip to Glendale, Ariz. for the BCS Championship game. First, we run the table and beat every team convincingly; a win is a win in the NFL, that is not the case in the NCAA. It has to be a good win by a substantial margin in college football. West Virginia wins out making the Cards look as good as possible, while Florida, Auburn and Texas drop at least one more game. Finally, Ohio State has to blow out Michigan, anything remotely close in that game will leave everyone wanting a rematch for the title.
Easy enough right? It is sad that college football’s championship game is decided by a big computer and some idiots in the media who think they know football instead of the teams themselves. I hate the BCS.
