Many students are finding their stress levels in overdrive as they study for final exams. Others are excited about the upcoming break and are ready to celebrate the semester’s end.
Luckily for students at the University of Louisville, several different activities scheduled for the coming week cater to the needs of students in either situation.
The REACH Center provides academic assistance to students year-round, but also hosts study sessions designed specifically for finals at the end of the semester.
REACH’s Finals Blitz is scheduled for April 18-20. Snacks will be available during the sessions. For more information on whether a study session is scheduled for a particular class and for date/times, call REACH at 852-6706.
Many students find themselves especially stressed at the end of the semester. Freshman music major Kim Texter said she has finals in seven out of nine of her classes, and is pretty stressed out about them.
For students like Texter, the Student Activities Board has arranged for free massages. Advance Massage Therapeutics will supply massage services April 25-27 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Students can sign up starting the morning of April 25 on the third floor of the SAC.
While many students may be cramming for multiple exams or finishing assignments, others may be nearly finished with their classes. Freshman marketing and management major Alex Hunnicutt said he has finals in two of five classes but isn’t worried about them.
For students who may not need or want finals-related services, both SGA and SAB have scheduled events that are more for entertainment.
The SAB in conjunction with the Pan-Hellenic Council and Interfraternity Council will host a cook-out from 5-7 p.m. and a concert from 5-10 p.m. on Monday, April 17. The concert will feature two bands, Halfway Hollow and 7-day Sun.
Daniel Marlin, SAB executive chair of variety and novelty acts, said he hopes the event will be an end-of-semester bash.
“We like to keep people loose,” said Shane Hook, SAB executive chair of the Film Program. He added that study sessions are available to help students through their upcoming exams, but that the events planned by SAB are designed specifically to give students a break from the all the end-of-semester stress.
On Reading Day, April 25, SAB will host a “Dive-In” at the Wright Natatorium from 4-7 p.m. They will be screening the film “Van Wilder” and will also provide food from Subway. There will also be a cannonball contest judged by several people from within the university community.
Later that evening, the SGA will host Finals Fiesta from 8-11 p.m. in the SAC Multipurpose Room. There they will provide free breakfast food, coffee, games and more.
SGA Vice President for Student Services Sowmya Srinivasan stated that there are other possible activities “in the works,” such as coffee in the library and extended library hours. Interested students can contact the SGA and SAB for finalized details.
