Following the string of editorials in this space over the last few semesters criticizing Chartwells and the quality of their services, The Cardinal staff is happy to give the food service provider some good ink for a change. Chartwells’ decision to extend their hours at some locations is simply good business.
A popular gripe among students has been that, having paid for meal plans up front, they are less valuable to Chartwells than the hundreds of cash cutomers who live off campus and flock in during “regular” business hours. The rationale here is that any food service Chartwells can get away with not providing meal plan holders is pure profit.
Changing operating hours to allow meal plan students living on campus to eat a sit-down meal at dinner time, rather than spending more food dollars off campus, should oil the squeaky wheels.
Chartwells’ decision to “revisit student interests” is to be applauded. Let’s hope that they find “student interests” comfortable enough to stay there on a permanent basis.
