Two students were arrested and one was hospitalized after violence erupted at a party at the Red Barn last Saturday. Several fights broke out near the end of the party, sponsored by the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, which led to the arrests.

According to Lt. Tom Fitzgerald of the Department of Public Safety, fights first broke out around 1 a.m. inside the party. The four DPS officers present dispersed the crowd, which then gathered in the parking lot. One of the officers witnessed an individual strike a victim, Jeffrey Sims, a 20-year-old male not affiliated with U of L, several times in the face, causing the victim to fall to the ground. Sims suffered a head wound and was hospitalized, but released later that night. Robert Andrew Haskins, an 18-year-old African-American freshman at U of L, was arrested and charged with fourth degree assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Officers also arrested 21-year-old Desmond Dawan McDaniel, who claimed no affiliation with the university. A loaded 40-caliber pistol was found on his person. He was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
