As far as food options go on the University of Louisville campus, Sub Hub, a sandwich shop located beneath University Tower Apartments, is definitely the hidden gem of them all. With a variety of options in bread, meat, cheese, veggies and condiments, there is an almost endless number of possibilities of subs you can make. Students have complete control over how to create a delicious sandwich, for only $5.49.

Starting with the bread, options include the usual white and wheat, as well as Italian, wheat berry, or a garlic wrap if you’re not in the mood for a sandwich. Moving on to the fillings, the cheese choices range from the traditional American and cheddar to the spicy pepper jack. While the options of bread and cheese aren’t exactly extravagant, they’re far from second rate.

However, it’s in the choices of meat, veggies and sauces that you can define yourself as a sub artist. The variety of meat isn’t staggering, but it’s well worth the price. Customers can choose between deli favorites like ham, roast beef and turkey, as well as fajita chicken and tuna salad. In addition, three strips of bacon can be added to the sandwich for 99 cents. If you’re looking for an even more filling meal, you can double the meat for only $1.99. For those who truly consider themselves sandwich virtuosos, choosing different types of meats and looking for tastes that complement each other can be done with every meal at Sub Hub. However, I wouldn’t recommend taste experimentation with the tuna salad.

The next step in the sub creating process is choosing the veggies. Offerings include the usual toppings like green peppers, onions, tomatoes, pickles, mushrooms and lettuce, among others. To finish your sandwich and create your ultimate culinary masterpiece, you can decide among sauces like Dijon and regular mustard, chipotle and regular mayo, ranch, oil and vinegar, and buffalo sauce.

In addition to being able to build your own sub sandwiches, you can also choose from a few daily specials at Sub Hub. One of the most highly recommended of these specials is the Cardinal Philly Steak, which consists of strips of tender pieces of steak that are smothered with your choice of hot, bubbly cheese and topped off with customer-selected veggies. Another excellent special offered by Sub Hub is the Louisville Meatball Sub.

To top off the meal, chips and a drink can be added for $2.29. There are a variety of chips to choose from, including Lay’s barbecue and Miss Vickie’s salt and vinegar, my personal favorite. Drinks are Pepsi products, so the staple corporate beverages like Mountain Dew and Brisk Iced Tea are there. But you can also find healthier choices, like Naked Juice, to complement your sub.

Sub Hub is easily one of the best restaurants on campus that you may have never heard of. It’s a great place for a hot, quick meal that has substance and will keep you coming back for more. So when you’re trying to escape the winter cold, stop in at Sub Hub, get warmed up, and craft yourself a tasty sandwich.

Sub Hub is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Sunday. It is closed on Saturdays.
