With the advent of the colossal, multi-screen cinemas, complete with every imaginable amenity, it is no wonder that drive-ins seem to have been forgotten, left as part of a bygone era of American culture, even though their popularity has remained fairly steady among adults and children alike. Louisville’s own Kenwood Drive-in located at 7001 Southside Dr., has served the area since its opening in 1949. This one-screen facility operates from April to September each year and charges only $6 for two first-run features. Kenwood has a full-service snack bar and it is obvious why they push so hard for the moviegoers to purchase their refreshments from the concession stand. It is imperative that the drive-ins generate money through food sales because the production companies of the movies shown take most, if not all, of the money collected for ticket sales.Nevertheless, through out the city, state and country, these once heralded institutions are beginning to once again be recognized as a source of good, clean, family fun.Whether attending with family or friends, it is bound to be a memorable time, especially catching two quality flicks. Most people may not realize what an exciting and worthwhile time they are missing when they pass by their local drive-in theaters. The saddest part, however, is that by driving by, folks are indirectly sending these bastions of American culture to early and altogether undeserved graves. For more information on the Kenwood Drive-in, including phone number and complete address, along with information about other area drive-ins, please visit http://www.drive-ins.com.
