Volleyball takes two of three
Despite losing in their final match, Louisville volleyball had a strong showing in the Marriot East Airport Classic pushing their record to 4-2. Match number one featured U of L freshman Tatyana Kolesnikova going for a career high 25 kills in a 3-1 victory over Dayton. The Cards moved on and dismantled Tennessee Tech 3-0 in their second match to set up a tough test against #18 ranked Arizona Wildcats. While both teams split the first two games the difference ended up being the Wildcat’s Brooke Buringurd who tallied 19 kills, two blocks and two aces to propel Arizona to a 3-1 victory over the Cards. Head Coach Leonid Yelin and his team will look to bounce back from the loss, they play this Friday when they travel to Lincoln to take on Nebraska.
Caracter doesn’t join team in Canada
Freshman Derrick Caracter did not make the trip north of the border for the basketball team’s exhibition play this weekend. Pitino and company made the decision because the university is investigating an issue that arose while first year player was in high school. The 6’9 New Jersey native has been practicing with the team and all signs are indicating that their was no intentional wrongdoing concerning the issue. Caracter has been practicing with the team and was planning on making the trip despite the fact that Coach Pitino still wants the freshman to drop weight. Caracter is currently at 295 lbs, with Pitino wanting him down to 275 lbs.
Cardinal field hockey team prevails in overtime
Head Coach Pan Bustin and her team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 4-3 thriller against former Mid American Conference foe Miami (Oh). After taking a 3-1 lead into halftime the Redhawks rallied for two goals late to force the extra period. Junior forward Janelle Avila broke the tie in the fourth minute to propel the Cards to victory. Louisville took on Dartmouth on Sunday but results of the game were unavailable because of the paper’s schedule. U of L travels to Winston Salem on Sunday to take on Wake Forest, beginning a five game roadtrip.
