The University of Louisville men’s intrasquad scrimmage took place Friday night at Cardinal Arena. In the coming out party for the 2006-2007 basketball team, the Red squad beat the White squad 85-77. The Cardinals took a few lumps when Juan Palacios, Terrance Farley, Andre McGee and Chris Current all went out with minor injuries. However, there were a few stars for the night. Terrence Williams scored 30 points for the Red team, while freshmen Edgar Sosa and Derrick Character added 23 points and 19 points respectively for the White team.

“They competed really hard,” said Pitino. “There’s a lot of depth on this team with a very talented group of freshmen. This is a very exciting and athletic basketball team. We’ve got to push our learning curve, especially at the defensive end.”

Next up for the men’s basketball team is an exhibition against Georgetown College tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Freedom Hall, followed two weeks later with the first regular season game against Northwestern State on Nov. 18 at Freedom Hall.

Prior to Friday’s scrimmage, the Big East held their annual men’s basketball media day at Madison Square Garden. Head coach Rick Pitino and the Cards were picked to finish sixth among the 16-team league. Pittsburgh was chosen to finish atop the standings, garnering 10 first place votes followed by Georgetown, Syracuse, Marquette and Connecticut.

Louisville junior Juan Tello Palacios was the only Cardinal chosen to the 10 man preseason All-Big East team. Fellow junior David Padgett was among three other players given honorable mentions to the preseason squad. Pittsburgh’s Aaron Gray was named preseason player of the year while Syracuse newcomer Paul Harris was tabbed as the preseason rookie of the year.
