The University of Louisville field hockey team experienced a big week, playing in their annual alumni scrimmage Aug. 20 and preparing for their season opener against Duke University Aug. 27. The team was also named host for the 2005 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship, and it seems like the U of L field hockey program is already making a big dent in the Big East conference.
The 2005 Cardinal squad defeated 26 former U of L players 9-1 at Trager Stadium Saturday.
“The 2005 alumni game marks the best and most competitive turnout we’ve ever had,” said Head Coach Pam Bustin. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to play this game, because it helps us prepare for our opener with Duke.”
U of L field hockey plays their opener in four days as part of the Champions Tournament. Louisville, the defending Mid-Atlantic Conference Champion, plays the 2004 NCAA runner-up Blue Devils at 2 p.m.
Other tournament competitors this weekend are Boston University and Michigan State University. All games will be held at Trager Stadium and are free for U of L students.
The Cardinals are also looking forward to hosting the 2005 NCAA Field Hockey Championship on November 18 and 20.
“Being chosen to host such a coveted event is a great compliment,” Bustin said.
The University of Louisville last hosted the 2002 national tournament.
“We look forward to a thrilling national championship tournament,” Bustin added.
