While David and Leigh Eddings are mostly known for The Belgaridand The Malloreon series, the husband and wife team have slid backfrom their normal sci-fi/ fantasy books to one that is more of athriller with a twist. They call this twist “Regina’sSong.”
“Regina’s Song” is told from the point of viewof the character Mark concerning events that lead up to some veryscary events.
While growing up, Mark spent a lot of his time around a set oftwin girls, who were the daughters of his dad’s best friend. With at least a seven year age difference between them, Mark becamethe girls’ “older brother.”
The girls were identical in every sense. Not even their parentscould tell the two apart. Mark, being the adoptive older brother, decided not to even try and proceeded to call them Twinkie or theTwinkie Twins. The nicknames were picked up by practicallyeveryone.
After leaving a party, the girls become stranded one night. Oneof them walks to get help and is raped and murdered. She is foundby her sister. Yet, no one knows which has been killed and whichone is alive. The twin that is alive is only speaking intwin-speak, which only her twin could understand. Any other recordsthat would show who the surviving twin is have been lost.
This book is written with the same great sense of humor that isshown in most of the works of David and Leigh Eddings. Thecharacters are portrayed with a sense of feeling that makes youthink you are the proverbial fly on the wall. The characters showgreat sense of humor with some of the unfortunate events that theywill eventually face.
If you have read the Belgarid and Malloreon books, then you knowthat those two great series are based in a realm that is not likeour world. Sorcery, insane gods, and prophecies are not found in”Regina’s Song.” This novel is more consistentwith the psychological depth that can be found in Eddings'”The Losers.”
With a shocking ending, “Regina’s Song” canonly come from David and Leigh Eddings. It is a definite mustread.
