We’ve all gotten the Facebook group invitations, many of us have heard the news, Stephen Colbert, host of “The Colbert Report,” as of Oct. 16, 2007, is running in the presidential primary elections as both a Democrat and a Republican in his home state of South Carolina.

As a coincidence, the Colbert Report is now being sponsored by the zesty taste of Nacho Cheese Doritos, as reported by Colbert himself, and Colbert’s election is being “covered” by the Colbert Report (thus avoiding being directly sponsored by a corporation).

The satirical show host has thrown his hat into the ring of an already crowded primary election ballad. What exactly qualifies Colbert as president material? Is Colbert’s special brand of “truthiness” and “wikilogic” not enough to get your vote?

Stephen Colbert is a self-described Democrat who has “no problems with Republicans, just Republican policies.”

His parents stressed the importance of intelligence; Colbert studied mostly philosophy before devoting his academic career to performing. A lot of Colbert’s intelligence is overlooked, hidden amongst the parody of the super Republican that he plays on his show, a testament to just how politically aware he really is.

Having a celebrity as a leader can improve international relations. Actors and TV personalities, like Arnold Schwarzenegger (governor of California) and Colbert, have an abundance of charisma and a natural draw that makes people like them.

In a time when our country needs a lot of international public relations “damage control,” having a leader who can charm the other world leaders and bring them over to the American way of thinking would be a weapon more powerful than any bomb, plane or bullet that any military has.

Colbert is a devout Catholic, his parents taught him at a very young age that it is possible to question the church’s teachings and still be Catholic. Is that not the kind of leader that America is desperately in need of? A leader who has set morals, but is willing to question the intelligence that is offered to him and still be true to the American people?

Political satire is criticism of government policies. With a president that will incite the change that Colbert jokes about on “The Colbert Report,” America can incite positive change in herself.

Vote for Colbert for president in 2008. After all, He’s America (and so can you).
