It’s a stretch calling me a die-hard fan of U of L sports.  I’ve been to plenty of games, but not all of them.  I cheer for the team, but my week isn’t ruined if they lose.
I’m not exactly a bandwagon fan, I’m a Cardinals fan, I just don’t have that much of a vested interest in any sport really.  I don’t have season tickets, nor do I TiVo every game, I’m really only interested in the last 2 minutes, and those are usually the only minutes I’ll watch.
So, I’m not band-wagon, and I’m not a die-hard, I’m just average.
This past weekend, the U of L men’s basketball team accomplished something that stirred my school spirit, earning top seed in the Big East championship.  Beating West Virginia late Saturday, 62-59.
I have no idea why I was excited, I don’t know what made me want our boys to win so bad, but for those 2 minuets, that’s what I was doing.
After the game, I celebrated with everybody else, we had a victory party for a game none of us went to, and very few of us even knew the people playing in the game on a personal level.
I could hear people yelling down the hall, I knew why they were yelling, I knew what made them so angry.  I was in Lexington, surrounded by Big Blue fans.  I looked across the room at another Cardinal fan, we both just smiled and nodded our heads.
At that moment, our school pride outshined the black-hate being spewed at us by UK fans.  That day, at least two students experienced the euphoria of school spirit.
We wouldn’t have died if U of L lost, we would have still had a party.  But the victory made the drink taste so much sweeter.
Maybe I don’t cover my body in Cardinal heads from head to toe, maybe my blood is only red, but nothing can bring the student body together like a win.
And it’s always good to bring the student body together.
