The case of former University of Louisville College of Education and Human Development Dean Robert Felner was arraigned, with Felner entering a plea of not guilty to one count of mail fraud, one count of money laundering conspiracy, and six counts of income tax evasion.
A count of mail fraud carries with it a maximum sentence of 20 years. A count of tax evasion brings with it a maximum five year sentence.
The court has set a trial date for Dec. 22 at 9:30 a.m. The Department of Probation recommended that Felner be released from custody under his own recognizance. Whalin agreed to Felner’s release on $100,000 bond.
Felner, who surrendered earlier this morning to federal authorities, gave over his passport in the process. Whalin implored Felner to continue his cooperation with the investigation.
“You have been aware of this investigation for a long time and we haven’t had any problems,” Whalin said. “I would warn you to make sure that that remains the same.”
