Voters elect gubernatorial candidates in mock primary
The University of Louisville student body elected Ky. Treasurer Jonathon Miller for the Democratic nomination and Gov. Ernie Fletcher for the Republican nomination in a mock primary election Thursday. The election, sponsored by the Student Government Association and McConnell Center, also gave students the opportunity to register for the 2007 gubernatorial election. Miller was chosen out of a field of seven Democrats, and Fletcher edged Anne Northup for the nomination.
Freshman named treasurer of Ky. College Republicans
University of Louisville freshman Robert Works was elected Treasurer of the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans last week. Works is an active member of the Ky. Republican party, serving as chair of the Ernie Fletcher campaign at U of L and appearing in a television campaign ad for Fletcher’s re-election. Works, along with six other college students, won the statewide position in an Owensboro convention Friday.
Finance students win competition
Students from the University of Louisville College of Business defeated four other regional universities for the second time in three years in the annual Student Investment Fund competition. As part of the competition, each team was given $50,000 to invest since last September, and the U of L team saw a 27 percent increase. The 16-member team, led by business professor Dr. Russ Ray, will keep half of their profits for scholarships.
U of L looks to social portals Facebook, Myspace for Web ideas
The University of Louisville is looking into a university-wide Web site modeled after the personal pages of Facebook and Myspace. Last week, the university began organizing a committee of students to provide feedback. The feedback session will take place tomorrow afternoon, but there is no word on when the site will be up.
Cardinals to run for cure in May
The University of Louisville Alumni Association will hold a 5k run/walk to benefit the “Finding the Answers to Cancer” campaign for the James Graham Brown Cancer Center next month. The run will begin and end at Fourth Street Live on May 26, 8:30-9:30 a.m. Registration forms can be found at http://alumni.louisville.edu, and the cost is $5 for students.
Campus improvements underway
Improvements around the University of Louisville’s Belknap campus may prove to be an obstacle for students during finals week. At Ekstrom Library, above, computers have been moved from the first floor to make way for a neww study area next year. Freshman biology major Diana Sahli said the construction outside the Interfaith Center obstructs students’ paths. “Especially when I walk from the SAC to the library.”
