This weekend the University of Louisville swept a three- game set at home against West Virginia University. West Virginia was perfect in Big East play until Friday night when the Cards won the first of the three-game set.
At the start of the series, West Virginia was 15-5, and 3-0 in Big East play, while the Cards were 16-8, and 2-1 in Big East play. Friday, the Cards pulled off a 4-3 come-from-behind win. After trailing 0-2 after five innings, U of L put up a three-run sixth thanks to some clutch hitting by Pete Rodriguez and Boomer Whiting, who each had two RBIs. Boomer also added three hits.
Trystan Magnuson got his first win of the season with two innings of relief, giving up one run. Zack Pitts was the starter for U of L giving a great performance of six-and-two-thirds innings and only giving up one earned run. Yurish for West Virginia picked up the loss.
Saturday the Cards kept it rolling. The Cards put 16 runs in a 16-5 victory. The charge was led by Jorge Castillo who had a monster game with three hits, a home run and seven RBIs. Isaiah Howes also added three hits and a home run.
Burton, Rodriguez and Alfonso all added two hits. Justin Marks for the Cards improved his record to 2-1, while Levi Maxwell for West Virginia received his first loss of the season moving his record to 4-1.
U of L then completed the sweep Sunday afternoon when they defeated the Mountaineers in the seventh inning when they tied the game off of a hit into center field.
That run was followed by one in the eighth inning after the right fielder Pete Rodriguez advanced to third base. Rodriguez scored after a hit by senior shortstop Chris Cates to win the game and finish the series.
