Have you ever wanted to play a Division I sport but didn’t think you could cut it? Well, here’s your chance: the University of Louisville women’s rowing program is inviting athletes of all ages to join the team. No experience is necessary, and the team will teach you how to row and train.
Informational sessions will be held Thursday, Aug. 25 and Monday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Red Barn. Although the rowing team generally targets incoming freshmen, all students at the university are encouraged to try out.
Mandy Moore, now a graduate student and a member of the varsity rowing team, joined the rowing program her sophomore year of college. She pointed out that women are sometimes afraid to join the team because it could affect their studies, but as a Civil Engineering student in Speed School, Moore said it could be done.
“There is no limit to an individual’s advancement in the sport,” she said. “Joining the rowing team is a great way to make new friends and surround yourself with strong, motivated women.”
Tryouts for the team begin Tuesday, Aug. 30 with a one mile test run at Cardinal Park. The only requirement is that you must be an undergraduate full-time student in good academic standing. Some paperwork is required, but it will be addressed at the info sessions.
“It’s a great opportunity to try a new sport. [Participants] will be able to get into shape and have a chance to race for the University of Louisville in a novice category,” said Assistant Coach Laurie Featherstone.
“Whether you have played organized sports or simply like to workout on your own, the rowing team is an excellent opportunity to try something different with no experience required,” Moore said. “If you are athletic and enjoy the outdoors, rowing is the perfect sport.”
