By University Of Louisville Press Release (April 6, 2005)

The University of Louisville has added new features to its Web news site that will provide video and audio news and will alert users when a new story has been added to the site using RSS (Really Simple Syndication) technology.

U of L for years has prepared audio and video footage that highlights research and faculty expertise at the university for media outlets around the state. Those stories now will be posted on the U of L news site and can be accessed by the media and the public.

“Since the primary audiences for these stories are outside Louisville, our video and audio news reports have been virtually unknown to many of those closest to the university,” said Brad Knoop, broadcast communications specialist. “Posting those stories online will give our faculty a place to see their stories and to promote them to their colleagues, and it will give alumni, prospective students and media throughout the country a glimpse of some of the exciting things going on at U of L.”

The news RSS feeds will allow anyone interested in U of L news to receive updates online through the use of a special news reader. The reader will deliver headlines, article summaries and links to the full text of audio and video stories. In addition, users can download the university’s audio news stories to their mp3 audio players via our audio-only RSS feed, a method referred to as “Podcasting.” The Web site includes an introduction to RSS and instructions on how to receive news RSS feeds from the university.

“We see this as a way for those who want to remain informed about U of L to get updates on news and events at the university quickly and easily,” said Neil Gibbs, computer communications specialist and developer of the U of L Web site. “Using RSS is a simple, free and effective way to make sure you know what’s going on at U of L.”
