University of Louisville medical school students are concerned about the health of people in their community and they want to do something about it before they graduate and begin careers in the health professions.

First- and second-year students have organized the Health Care Classic, a 5K run/walk April 2 at 8 a.m. to promote fitness in Louisville. In its 17th year, the 2005 race is part of the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement, with which U of L is a partner. The movement encourages Louisvillians to become more active.

“U of L medical students are concerned about the health of their community, which ranks among the top in the country for obesity and type II diabetes,” said Clint Morehead, a first-year student who is co-directing the race with second-year student Laura Voegele.

“As first- and second-year medical students, busy with studying for exams and boards, and lacking clinical experience, the Health Care Classic is one of the only ways that we can offer our help,” Morehead said.

All proceeds from the race will benefit The Healing Place, an outreach program of the Jefferson County Medical Society that provides programs to help individuals and families break the cycle of dependence and homelessness, he said.

The race will begin at the School of Medicine, 500 S. Preston St., and circle the downtown area.

Registration is $15 through March 26. After that date, it will be $20.

A registration form is online at http://www.healthcareclassic.com.

Forms also are available at Swag’s Sport Shoes, Ken Combs Running Store, Fleet Feet, U of L Student Activities Center on Belknap Campus and U of L Health Sciences Fitness Center.

Each participant will receive a T-shirt. Awards will go to overall finishers as well as to top finishers in each age group. Door prizes also will be given.
