The University of Louisville and University of Kentucky rivalry continued Friday night when the Cardinal ice hockey team hosted the Wildcats at Pantherland arena, for their last home game of the season. U of L was outmatched in a 9-1 blowout in the first of a two game series against the wildcats.
It was nearly four minutes into the first period before the Cardinals could even get the puck near the UK goaltender. UK’s strong defense gave the Cardinals limited opportunities to even pursue shots on the opposing goal. The strong defense that the Wildcats were playing held the Cardinals at bay while UK scored their first goal with 13:35 left in the first period. U of L was unable to mount an offensive presence that could break through the tough game plan that the Wildcats were pursuing.
During the second period, UK continued to play a great game on both sides of the puck. However, their defensive game was beginning to wear down a bit, giving U of L more shots on the goal. U of L’s defensive man, Brent Fowler was able to score against UK goaltender Jason Graves with a little over 10 minutes left in the second period, but by that time it was already 4-1 in UK’s favor. The second period became a key turning point for the Wildcats and the Cardinals. Although U of L’s goalie, Scott Camara was able to make a few great saves during the period before intermission, he still allowed UK to score two more times in the second. U of L’s inability to create scoring opportunities for themselves ultimately lead to the second period collapse. A last minute Goal by UK’s Randy Graves closed out the period leaving 6-1 Kentucky lead.
During the third period the Cards were unable to rally back from the insurmountable deficit. UK continued to score goals and fist fights between players became increasingly regular. Even the fans were contributing to the in-state rivalry that carries on in every competitive activity. The Wildcats made it 9-1 before the final period ended. Neither team was available for comment after the affair was over. The second game will be played at Kentucky.
The Cardinal Ice Hockey team plays Tennessee in a two game series beginning February 8 in Tennessee.
