Jenny Lewis, taking a break from her band Rilo Kiley, has created an album that is both light-hearted and lyrically heavy, an almost perfect debut and a beautiful display of Lewis’ range.
The songwriting is witty and irreverent. Sultry on tracks like “Melt Your Heart,” and rollicking in “The Big Guns,” “Rabbit Fur Coat” is a playful album.
You may remember Lewis from her role in “Troop Beverly Hills” (1989), but the typically dismal abilities of actresses-turned-musicians are not here.
A host of indie darlings took part in the CD including Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, Maroon 5’s James Valentine and Mickey Madden, and Conor Oberst.
“It’s taken me some years to feel confident writing alone. I was more relaxed and worked on these songs at my leisure,” Lewis stated.
And “Rabbit Fur Coat” definitely proves Rilo Kiley’s frontwoman has got the guns to make her way alone.
