Looking for something different to do this weekend? Craving a movie that doesn’t involve awkward sports humor or guys in spandex? Then students should check out the unique offerings being shown at Louisville’s Apex theaters.
The Baxter Theater on Bardstown Rd. is continuing its popular Midnight at the Baxter movie series with “Team America: World Police” this Saturday night. This cult favorite comes from the twisted and much celebrated creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The story follows the adventures of Team America (played by puppets) as they battle terrorists, make fun of celebrities and perform memorable musical numbers.
Like all midnight movies at the Baxter this promises to be a good time, with movie fans filling the seats ready to sing along and shout out their favorite lines.
For those with more cultured entertainment inclinations, Village 8 (also owned by Apex) is running an Asian Film Festival this Sept. From Sept. 14-18 the featured movie will be “Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles.”
Directed by Zhang Yimou (of “Hero” and “House of Flying Daggers” fame), this heart-wrenching film explores the strained relationship between an emotionally distant father and his son who is dying of cancer. To try and mend their relationship, the father undertakes a journey around China to finish the documentary his son was forced to abandon due to illness. Along the way, he not only gains a better understanding of his son but also of himself.
Winner of Best Foreign Language Film at the 2006 San Diego Film Critics Awards and Best Asian Film at the 2007 Hong Kong Movie Awards, “Riding Alone” is sure to be a well spent two hours. Daily show times can be found at http://www.apextheaters.com/village8. An extra incentive for the thrifty: the ticket price is only $4.
So this weekend, students who are faced with the inevitable question “What am I going to do tonight?” should grab some friends and some popcorn and settle in for a little silver screen escapism.
