The Louisville Cardinals defeat the Kentucky Wildcats, but lose Michael BushBy

While many people frowned at the twenty plus point spread for this year’s Governor’s Cup odds makers had it right. Louisville rolled over Kentucky 59-28. The Cards tallied over 600 yards of total offense and despite giving up several big plays through the air, held the Wildcats offense in check.

The game started with a UK winning the toss and deferring to U of L. The Cards quickly took the advantage with a three play 1:34 drive capped off with a Michael Bush 32-yard TD run, plowing down the middle of the field. Getting the ball back just minutes later Bush found the endzone for a second time on a four yard run. Brian Brohm got into the mix throwing a one yard pass to full back Brock Bolen and three minutes later Bush was back with another touchdown run to open up a 28-0 lead.

UK came back with Louisville native Keenan Burton catching a 73-yard pass from UK’s quarterback Andre Woodson. Then a few drives later a four yard pass from Woodson to Dicky Lyons, made the score 31 – 14 with the Cards leading going into the half.

“We came out of the locker room [after the half] wanting to play fast and keep up the pace.” Said Coach Bobby Petrino in his post-game press conference.

UK’s offense sputtered to start the second half while the Cards George Stripling did not getting his first touchdown of the year. The Cats answered with Dicky Lyons reception from Woodson and running 80 yards to the Cards endzone, making the score 38-21 with the Cards on top.

After Stripling scored his second touchdown at the 3:35 mark in the 3rd Quarter, the Cats got caught deep in their end. Woodson scrambled and lost the ball in the endzone under the pressure of the defense. The Cards capitalized and Louisville’s Zach Anderson recovered the ball to bring the score to 52-21. By that time it was all but over for the Cats.

The fans started to leave, but the Cards kept on going with their second unit. Hunter Cantwell lead the offense, handing off mostly to running back Anthony Allen who ended up scoring the last touchdown of the night, making the score 59-28, Louisville.

After the game all eyes turned onto Michael Bush. The possible Heisman candidate left the game early in the third quarter in what is being described as a fracture in his right leg. He was taken off the field and diagnosed almost immediately. Surgery was done this morning at 7:30 am to repair the bone.

According to Petrino it was “devastating” to both the team and Bush and now it is up to him on whether he wants to redshirt this year or still make this his final year of college football.

“Losing a guy like Michael Bush, he’s irreplaceable. You can’t replace him with one guy. But we have a team of guys like George Stripling, Kolby Smith and Anthony Allen that can come in and try to replace him.” Said Brohm after the game.

Up next for the Football team is a road game at Temple on Saturday, at noon. It will be televised on WHAS11.
