Pottery brings out By Courtney L. Woods

Feeling creative and want to express yourself through art? Not too good with canvas and oil paints? Don’t worry, you don’t have to be Van Gogh or Monet to paint. All you have to do is venture down Bardstown Road to The Artist in You, next door to Uptown Cafe.

The pottery studio has been open since June 24 and welcomes its visitors with a warm, relaxing atmosphere with friendly people and a wide variety of ready-to-paint pottery. The studio fee is $8 plus the price of the piece(s) that you wish to paint. This studio fee is for the whole day, is not charged per item, and covers the glazing and firing of the finished pottery. The pieces are nontoxic, so you can actually drink out of your coffee mug and eat from your sushi plate.

Many types of tools are available for use: brushes, sponges, puffy paints, stencils and stamps. So if you’re extremely artistically challenged, have no fear- even you can make an exceptional piece of pottery and be proud of your hard and handy work.

Kim McKinney, the owner of The Artist in You, says that the studio is “great for Ladies Night Out, first dates and showers. We also do birthday parties for all ages.” As you paint, you can help yourself to hot chocolate, tea, coffee, and soft drinks as part of the studio’s cafe appeal.

After you paint, your pottery will be ready for pickup within a week. However, be warned; chances are that you will want to paint again when you go back. The pottery makes for great personalized gifts and it is also a creative and fun way to spend your evenings (open until 9 p.m. Monday-Friday, until 11 p.m. on Saturdays, and the studio is closed on Sundays). If you can’t make it to the heart of the Highlands, then you will be delighted to know that The Artist in You is opening a new location at the Summit shopping center on September 28.
