A new dorm for the men’s basketball team has been approved by the University of Louisville. The new facility will be called Cardinal Hall. Construction for the new building will begin this summer and is scheduled to be completed by late fall 2003. The funding for this project is mostly coming from the contractor. U of L will have to pay a contractor one dollar per year for twenty years. After twenty years, the dorm will be donated to U of L by the contractor without any outstanding debt.
According to the NCAA rules, half of the dorm is to be occupied by student athletes while the other half is to be occupied by regular students. The University will collect rent from the nonstudent athletes to help pay for the costs of the facility. Furnishings for the dorm are estimated to be at least $1 million. However, U of L will not have to pay this either, because the money for the furnishings is to be donated.
The reason for building this new dorm, according to the Athletics Department, is to support the student athlete residence and support for the team, which otherwise means the new dorm will be good for recruiting purposes. That is why as part of the NCAA regulations, 35 of the beds are to be occupied annually by student athletes. U of L will have the final say so on the construction and design of the building, and the university will be responsible for maintaining the building after its completion.
