“I liked the way they handled ourselves, we’re taking steps to be able to compete in this conference. This is the best in the country and no one is going to feel sorry for you.”
That’s what head coach Mark Beckham had to say after the loss against Boston College. The Cardinals fell 6-1 to the Eagles. The lone point came from sophomore Abbie Pahz who won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
With the loss U of L is now 7-9 on the year while BC sits at 7-7. The Eagles dominated the doubles point as they were up on all three courts. After winning on court one and three Boston College took the 1-0 lead.
The only Cardinals to win sets on the day was Pahz and freshman Sena Suswam. Suswam would end up losing against Asiya Diar 6-2, 3-6, 6-7. Pahz defeated Jennifer Ren and said the team remains close through the tough stretch.
“We’re such a close team, right now we’re just sticking together,” she said. “It’s hard to keep going on a losing streak like this but we’re staying together and positive. We’re working on and off the court to get better.”
The visiting Eagles were able to close out the game quickly as they won the first three courts in singles. The remaining three had the Cardinals fighting for the win. Ellie Stokes was nearly able to win the second set but lost 6-2, 7-6 to Emily Safron.
Beckham thinks it’s the small things that is adding up for his team.
“Every situation that we’re in, we have to learn from it,” he said. “If you miss a shot on Friday that could of won the match, you have to learn from that and be ready to use that for the match Sunday. You have to use what you learned Friday to not miss Sunday, that’s what I preach to them.”
The Cardinals are at the start of a brutal conference stretch. Of the final nine games of the year there are eight conference opponents. Next up Louisville hosts no. 8 Duke Sunday. The Cards will try to notch their first conference win of the year.
